HOW TO MAKE AND CANCEL AN APPOINTMENT
We aim to offer all our patients access to a doctor or nurse within 48 hours but can offer earlier appointments if the problem is urgent.
Appointments can be made by telephoning the surgery, calling in or via patient access.
A standard appointment with a doctor is allocated 10 minutes. If you feel you need longer than this, then we do encourage you to request a “double appointment”. This helps the doctor’s appointment schedule to run on time.
Standard nurse appointments are allocated between 10-30 minutes depending upon the nature of the problem. To help you book the receptionist will ask you a few details.
Sometimes you might find that our appointments may be running late. This will always be because the doctor or nurse has had to deal with an unexpectedly complex problem affecting other patients earlier on in the clinic. Usually this is unavoidable and we do ask your understanding in this matter.

You are very welcome to be accompanied by a trusted friend or relative at your consultation if you wish, and this is all the more important if English is not your first language, or if you feel you might not be able to express what you need clearly to the doctor or nurse.
In additon, for intimate examinations, you will be offered the choice of having another professional clinician present at the examination. This is called chaperoning.
Because we are a small practice this might not be possible at all times. If we cant allocate a chaperone when you wish one to be there, then we can reschedule your examination to another time.
You can book a telephone consultation with a doctor or nurse. Please call 01865 311811 and the receptionist will arrange this for you. If the request is non urgent the appointment may not be on the same day and for continuity it is usually best to book a phone call with the doctor or nurse you have consulted about the problem previously.
To discuss test results you will be booked in to speak to the doctor who ordered the tests. As our doctors all work different days you may have to wait 2 - 3 days to speak to them about your results. This is not a cause for concern as if the doctor is worried about a result they will always call you first.
Please make sure that you are available for a call at the specified time - we cannot keep calling back
For urgent issues the duty doctor will triage your phone call and respond accordingly. For urgent matters we expect patients to be available to speak to a GP at any time of the working day.
The types of appointment available include:
- Telephone consultations (you are encouraged to call to speak to a doctor or nurse if your problem could easily be rectified over the phone)
- Advance booking (routine) medical or nurse appointments (single or double)
- Urgent medical or nurse appointments
- College surgeries (Monday and Thursday lunchtimes for New College students and Tuesday lunchtimes for Hertford College students)
- Home visits - for housebound patients
- Tuesday evening surgery (6.30-8.00pm; GP appointments available)
- Alternate Saturday morning surgery (8.00am - 10.00am; GP appointments available)
Any appointment can be made by calling the surgery on 01865 311 811 or by booking online. To book online you need first to open a Patient Access account, and you can ring the surgery to arrange for this to happen. Should you need to cancel an appointment please let us know as soon as possible.
