student health

Student health

We are delighted to be entrusted with student health at two of Oxford University’s colleges, as well as looking after the well-being of rowers and athletes.

Students of Hertford and New Colleges are registered at the start of the Michaelmas term, and we provide Surgery times at the colleges themselves.

You can find information on how to register and our confidentiality standards elsewhere on the site, but below is some general information designed to help students make full use of the care offered by 28 Beaumont Street.

Temporary registration with your home doctor between terms

If you need to consult your Home Doctor during the vacation, please do not allow them to fully re-register you – only register as a temporary patient. This will ensure that your medical records remain in Oxford and are available when needed.

We also ask that you inform us if you have been ill, changed medications or received treatments while away from Oxford, preferably with a letter from your Doctor or hospital.

What to do if you are unwell or need an appointment

Students can make an appointment with one of our doctors, either in college or at 28 Beaumont Street.

Students living in college who develop minor illnesses (colds, diarrhoea, 'flu etc) can see the college nurse in the college surgery. You can also look at the NHS Direct website for advice.

If you are unable to leave your room, get someone to phone the nurse or leave a message at the Porters Lodge. She will see you promptly and, if necessary, inform the College Doctor. Requests for home visits should be made by 11am, except in emergencies.

If you become ill during term-time and choose to go home, or have been to the John Radcliffe A&E Department, please ask someone to leave a message in the Porters Lodge for the college nurse so an appropriate follow-up takes place.

Nights and weekends

OXEMS (Oxford Emergency Medical Service) is open Monday to Thursday (6.30pm -8.00am), during Bank Holidays, and at weekends (Friday 6.30pm - Monday 8.00am).

If you need medical advice out of hours, call OXEMS on 0845 345 8995. A Duty Doctor will call you back, assess your problem and either offer you advice, further assessment at the Medical Centre or, if necessary, send out a doctor.

You can also ring NHS Direct on 0845 4647.

Accident and emergency

John Radcliffe Hospital’s A&E department will deal with emergencies and injuries (broken bones, serious cuts, overdoses etc), but in a serious emergency you should call 999 or 112.

If your problem is serious but does not require immediate medical attention, call 28 Beaumont Street during opening hours; your details will be passed on to our duty Triage doctor.

Contraception and sexual health

If you need contraception or advice on Sexual Health, please see the college nurse, book an appointment with the doctor, or speak with the Alec Turnbull Family Planning Clinic (01865 456666).

The clinic can provide free contraception, emergency contraception, on-the-spot pregnancy testing and advice, and can refer women directly to the John Radcliffe Hospital for a termination.

If you need emergency contraception (the 'morning-after pill'), call us on 01865 311811 or visit a pharmacy as soon as possible.

The free and confidential Sexual Health clinic is located at the Harrison Department (GUM Clinic), and offers information, counselling and testing for sexually transmitted infections including HIV. It is located at the Churchill Hospital in Headington (01865 231231)

Chlamydia screening is available at the Practice or via a college nurse.

Cervical smears

If you have been sexually active for two years or more, it is advisable for you to have a cervical smear (a screening test for early cervical cancer) every three years.

Appointments for smears can be booked with the Practice Nurse at 28 Beaumont Street. When booking, please state that it is for a smear. Aim for an appointment in the middle of your cycle (around 2 weeks after your period starts).

Mental health

Studying at Oxford can sometimes be a stressful experience and your mental health can suffer as a result. If you find your mental health suffering through stress, you can book an appointment to talk to one of our doctors, or speak to the Oxford University Counselling Service on 01865 270300.

Travel vaccinations

Vaccinations and malaria prevention are arranged by the Practice Nurses at 28 Beaumont Street, and need to be done six weeks before departure.

The Occupational Health Service (OHS) gives vaccines travelling on University business or electives. They also give advice to Expedition leaders.

Students will be given their own Vaccination Record, and will need to update us of any jabs.

Hepatitis B vaccination

This is mandatory in those undertaking any clinical work, and advisable for those at risk of infection (e.g. people working with the homeless).

The Medical School requires proof of immunity for medical students before they start clinical attachments. The standard course involves three jabs and takes six months, although an accelerated course is available for special circumstances.

Meningitis C vaccination

Every student entering university education for the first time, whatever their age or country of origin, should receive a Meningitis C vaccination.

It remains important to be aware of the signs of Meningitis as other strains are not covered.

MMR vaccination

Most students will have received at least one MMR vaccination. It is desirable to have received two vaccinations (the Primary followed by the Booster) for full protection.

If you’re unsure how many vaccinations you have received, please contact us or your current GP (if you have not yet registered with us) for further information.

Dentistry

Roger Griffiths (01865 243702) will see undergraduate students under the NHS system – all other college members are seen privately.

Graduate students wishing to be treated on the NHS should see David Beardmore (01865 559505). Please note that NHS dental care is not free – a check up is around £15.

To find out if you qualify for free care, see your College Nurse.
