28 Beaumont Street are the Hertford College doctors (01865 311811).
Healthcare in college The College Nurse The College Nurse, Mrs Yo Davies, can be seen in her room in OB1 Basement. She can be contacted by phone (2)79401 or email: yo.davies@hertford.ox.ac.uk Yo will
also visit anyone who is unwell and living in College, as well as anyone living in Abingdon House, Warnock House or the Graduate Centre, provided the Lodge is informed by 10.45 am (Lodge Phone: (2)79400). Yo is
trained in Problem Solving Therapy. This is a short, collaborative talking treatment aimed at treating depression, anxiety or other emotional problems. Please contact her if you feel this might be of benefit to you.

Below you will find information on your medical care while you are studying in Oxford, how to register, and what to do if you are ill. Confidentiality The team at 28 Beaumont Street are here to help and support you. We are NOT part of the College authorities. You have the guarantee of a confidential Doctor-Patient relationship, and this may only be broken with your express permission or in unusual circumstances when the law requires us to do so. This is important to know, as occasionally you may not wish your Tutor or another person in authority to know about your health.Click here to see our confidentiality policy Registration
It is a College requirement that you register with an Oxford Practice during your time in Oxford. Once you register with us, your medical records will be transferred to 28
Beaumont Street for the duration of your studies. You do not have to register with us but there are advantages in doing so as we are familiar with the way College works and run surgeries in college.
If you choose not to register with us, or transfer to another Practice, please let the college know the name of your Doctor in case of emergencies. Temporary Registration with your Home Doctor during Vacation time
If you need to consult your Home Doctor during the vacation, please do not allow them to fully re-register you - make sure that you register only as a TEMPORARY patient.
This will ensure that your medical records remain in Oxford. Otherwise, your records will be constantly in transit between your Oxford and your Home Practice, a process
which can take several months each time, so information may not available when needed. IF YOU ARE A NON-UK RESIDENT IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU REGISTER WITH
US AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO ENABLE YOU TO RECEIVE FREE NHS TREATMENT. If you wait until you are ill, it may be too late for you to qualify for free health care under the current NHS regulations. How to Register
You can register with us in college during your health check at the start of Michaelmas term. An appointment for registration and a health check in college will be arranged for
all new students and the time of your appointment will be displayed in the post-room. In the event that you cannot attend on this occasion, please arrange another time with the college nurse at the earliest opportunity.
You can also register with us at any time by popping into the surgery to complete the Registration form. Illnesses during vacation To help us keep your medical records up to date, please inform us, preferably with a copy of a letter from your Doctor or Hospital, if you have been ill, changed medications, or received treatment while away from Oxford.
What to do if you are unwell or need an appointment
If you become unwell or need medical advice you can consult the college nurse, or make an appointment with one of our doctors, either in college or at 28 Beaumont
Street. There is no sanatorium or sick-bay facility in the University, so you will need to be cared for in your college room, although some students may choose to go home.
Students living in college who develop minor illnesses (e.g. colds, diarrhoea, 'flu) can see the college nurse in the college surgery. You can also look at the
If you are sufficiently unwell to have to stay in your room, please get a friend or neighbour to contact the nurse by telephone or message at the Porters Lodge. She will
see you promptly and, if necessary, inform the College Doctor. Requests for home visits should be made by 11.00 at the latest, except in emergencies.
If you become ill during term-time and choose to go home, or have been to the John Radcliffe A&E Department, please ask someone to leave a message in the Porters
Lodge for the college nurse so that appropriate follow-up takes place. Appointments at 28 Beaumont Street Students can book an appointment with any of the doctors or nurses at 28 Beaumont Street. We are open 8am - 6pm. Phone 01865 311811 or book online Nights and Weekends OXEMS (Oxford Emergency Medical Service) serves Oxford City Monday to Thursday
from 6.30pm to 8.00am, during Bank Holidays, and at Weekends from Friday 6.30pm to Monday 8.00am. It is staffed by Oxford City GPs and is located at the St Bartholomew Medical Centre, Manzil Way (off the Cowley Road).

put through to a call centre which will take your details and pass them on to OXEMS. You will then receive a call by return from a Duty Doctor who will assess your problem
and either offer you advice or further assessment at the Medical Centre, or if necessary send out another doctor to visit. You can also ring Accident and Emergency The Accident & Emergency Department at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington
caters for Emergencies and injuries; e.g. broken limbs, serious cuts, overdoses, loss of consciousness, severe breathlessness etc. In a real emergency, dial 999 or 112 and
ask for the Ambulance service. If the problem is urgent but does not require immediate medical attention, call 28 Beaumont Street during opening hours on 01865 311811
Contraception and Sexual Health
If you need contraception or advice on Sexual Health,
please see the college nurse or book an appointment with
the doctor in college or at the surgery. Alternatively
you can book an appointment directly with the Alec
Turnbull Family Planning Clinic which provides
contraception, emergency contraception and on-the-spot
pregnancy testing. The clinic can also provide advice on
pregnancy and abortion, as well as refer women directly
to the John Radcliffe Hospital for a termination.

Contraception is free of charge to everyone. If you need emergency contraception
(the 'morning-after pill'), call us on 01865 311811 or visit a pharmacy as soon as possible (emergency contraception is more effective the earlier it is taken). The Sexual Health clinic is located at the
Harrison Department
(GUM Clinic). It is a free and confidential
clinic offering information, counselling and testing for
sexually transmitted infections including HIV.

transmitted infections. Cervical Smears
If you have been sexually active for 2 years or more, it is advisable for you to have a cervical smear (a screening test for early cervical cancer) every 3 years. Appointments for smears can be booked with the Practice Nurse at 28 Beaumont Street (01865 311811). Please state that the appointment is for a smear when you ring
and book the appointment for a time in the middle of your cycle (i.e. around 2 weeks after your period starts). Mental Health Studying at Oxford can sometimes be a stressful experience and your mental health
can suffer as a result. If you would like to talk in confidence to one of our doctors, please make an appointment in college or at the Practice. The Travel Vaccinations Travel advice, vaccinations and malaria prevention are arranged by the Practice
Nurses at 28 Beaumont Street (not in college). An appointment should be made at least 6 weeks before departure as some vaccines take this amount of time to become effective. The Occupational Health Service
(OHS) also operates a Travel Vaccination Service for those travelling on University business or electives, and they give advice to Expedition leaders. In general, expeditions will need to fund their own vaccinations. Students will be given their own Vaccination Record and are asked to keep it safely. Since there is no exchange of medical information between the OHS and GPs for
reasons of confidentiality, please update us if you have any jabs so we can keep your medical record up to date. Hepatitis B Vaccination This is mandatory in those undertaking clinical work of any sort, and advisable for those
at risk of infection (e.g. people working with the homeless). You can receive advice about this from your Clinical Tutor or from the Occupational Health Service. Please
discuss with us if you are in any doubt. The Medical School requires documented proof of Hepatitis B immunity for medical students before they start clinical attachments.
The standard Hepatitis B vaccination course involves 3 jabs and takes 6 months so please plan ahead if you need it! An accelerated course is available for special circumstances. Meningitis C vaccination
The Department of Health advises that every student entering university education for the first time, whatever their age or country of origin, should receive Meningitis C vaccination at the earliest opportunity. Most UK students will have had the vaccination at school, except perhaps for a few who may have been taking a Gap Year. If you believe you may not have received this
vaccination, please contact us. It remains important to be aware of the signs of Meningitis as other strains such as Meningitis B are not covered by the vaccine. MMR Vaccination Most students will have received at least 1 MMR vaccination. It is desirable to have
received 2 vaccinations (the Primary Immunization followed by the Booster) for full protection. There is currently a Mumps outbreak because many individuals have
missed out on the MMR jab. Mumps is rarely life-threatening but can be an extremely unpleasant illness, especially for young men who may develop testicular mumps, and
we advise that you receive a second MMR jab if you have not already done so. If you are unsure how many MMR vaccinations you have received, please contact us or
your current GP (if you have not yet registered with us) for further information. NHS Dentistry The College Dentist, Mr Roger Griffiths, is happy to take all undergraduate students under the NHS system. All other members of college are seen privately.
The College Dental Surgery is at 22 Beaumont Street - Phone 243702. The College Dentist for graduate students who wish to be seen under the NHS system
is Mr David Beardmore. His surgery is at 409 Banbury Road Oxford. Telephone number Ox.559505. Please note that NHS dental care is not free. Patients pay part of the cost of their
treatment. A check up costs approximately £15.00. You may qualify for free care. Please ask the College Nurse to give you an HC1 application form.
